A resident of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Petrov had collaborated with regional politicians before moving to Moscow, where he lived from 2020 to 2024, working as a technical specialist in a private company. According to the media outlet Life of Kamchatka, a case was opened against him for "calls to terrorism" over a comment he posted in August 2020. In the comment, he sarcastically suggested administering a COVID vaccine to the "Kremlin's Koschei" implying that the virus might take him (Koschei the Immortal is a character from Russian folklore, often depicted as an evil figure obsessed with power and immortality). On January 8, 2025, Petrov was taken into custody.
