Before his detention, he worked as a journalist in the editorial office of the newspaper "Public Defender", covering the topics of arbitrary behaviour of law enforcement agencies, and was also engaged in human rights activities.
Detained on July 28th 2020, taken into custody on July 31st 2020. At that time, the journalist was investigating the involvement of the Drug Control Department of the Chelyabinsk Region in the operation of online drug shops.
In October 2021, the ECHR ruled that the journalist's preventive measure should have been changed. The court in Chelyabinsk refused to do so in January 2023. His lawyer reported that according to the results of expert examinations, Gromovoi's DNA was not found on the drug parcels. On 31st of January 2023, he went on hunger strike.
On 28th of March 2025, Gromovoi was sentenced, details are unknown.
