On 10 June 2019, he was detained on his way to a court hearing in the Simferopol Hizb ut-Tahrir case in Rostov-on-Don (one of the defendants, Rustem Ismailov, is Omerov's son-in-law). An officer in plain clothes announced that Omerov would have to go to the police station in Kerch. Omerov became ill, but was taken away. On the same day, the court took him into custody on charges of organising the activities of a terrorist organisation due to his alleged involvement with the Islamist party Hizb ut-Tahrir, which has nothing to do with terrorism. In February 2020, Omerov was charged with preparation for the violent overthrow of the constitutional order.
On 12 January 2021, he was sentenced to 18 years in a strict regime colony.
