Oleg Shidlovsky was detained in August 2020 and taken into custody on charges of organising the activities of an extremist organisation due to his involvement with the Jehovah's Witnesses community. Members of this community are prosecuted under extremist laws solely for engaging in religious activities such as meetings, joint worship services, and recruiting new followers. On 19 September 2022, Shidlovsky was sentenced to six and a half years in a medium-security prison.
