On 23 November 2023, security officers searched the home of Rustam Fararitdinov in the village of Kurmanaevo, Bashkortostan. He was detained. According to his brother, Bashkir activist Ruslan Gabbasov — who has fled Russia and is wanted in several criminal cases — Fararitdinov was told he would “serve time for his brother.” Nothing was seized from the house.
Gabbasov claimed that Fararitdinov was able to contact his wife and asked her to relay a message: if Gabbasov returned to Russia, Fararitdinov would be released — if not, he would be jailed. The following day, Fararitdinov was remanded in custody on charges of aiding terrorist activity.
On 7 August 2024, he was sentenced to five years and six months in a strict-regime penal colony.
