On 5 October 2021, a search was conducted at Komandirov’s home, after which he was detained. The court ordered that he be placed in custody as part of a criminal case on the justification of terrorism. On 30 November, following an extension of his detention, Komandirov went on hunger strike, demanding that a non-custodial pre-trial measure be imposed. He ended the hunger strike on 9 December.

In late March 2022, during an appeal hearing on the pre-trial restriction, Komandirov learned that the Investigative Committee had opened three additional criminal cases against him – under the article on the rehabilitation of Nazism (part 4 of article 354.1 of the Criminal Code), on incitement to hatred (paragraph "a", part 2 of article 282 of the Criminal Code) and on insulting a representative of the authorities (article 319 of the Criminal Code).

On 28 July, he was sentenced to six years in a general regime penal colony.
