On the night of 16 November 2018, Jehovah's Witnesses were searched in Dzhankoy. After that, Sergei Filatov, who led the local religious organisation of Jehovah's Witnesses "Sivash" (liquidated in 2017), was questioned. Banned literature was found at his home. Later it became known that Filatov is suspected of organising the activities of an extremist organisation due to his involvement with the Jehovah's Witnesses community. Representatives of this community are prosecuted under extremist articles solely for religious activities: meetings, joint worship services, attracting new followers. He was released on his own recognisance not to leave the country.
On 5 March 2020, he was sentenced to six years in a general regime colony.
