He was detained on 15 March 2022 at an airport in Moscow. Gromov was transported to Kazan, where he was searched. On 17 March, the court placed him into custody as a suspect in a case of organising activities of an extremist organisation in connection with his involvement in the Jehovah's Witnesses. Members of this community are prosecuted under extremist articles solely for religious activities: meetings, joint worship services, attracting new supporters.
Later he was also charged with financing extremist activities. On 14 September 2023, Gromov was sentenced to six years and one month in prison.
