Sergey Udaltsov

Sergey Udaltsov is a coordinator of the Left Front (a leftist political organization in Russia) and one of the leaders of mass opposition protests since the mid-2000s. In October 2012, a case was opened against him for preparing to organise mass riots following the NTV film Anatomy of Protest-2, which alleged that he, together with Leonid Razvozzhayev and Konstantin Lebedev, had discussed the financing of mass riots in Russia in June 2012 with Georgi Targamadze, head of the Georgian parliamentary committee on defence and security. The film included video footage allegedly showing a meeting between Udaltsov and Targamadze, but the origin of the video is unknown. According to the investigation, Udaltsov and Razvozzhayev, together with Lebedev, organised training camps for participants in future mass riots in various regions of the country. On 17 October, Udaltsov was released on his own recognisance. In January 2013, the Investigative Committee announced that the Anatomy of Protest-2 case and the Bolotnaya case had been merged into a common case. According to the investigation, Udaltsov is one of the organisers of the mass riots that allegedly took place on Bolotnaya Square on 6 May 2012, and he also organised them with Targamadze's money. On 9 February 2013, Udaltsov was sent under house arrest. On 24 July 2014, the Moscow City Court sentenced him to four and a half years' imprisonment in a general regime penal colony. On 18 March 2015, the Supreme Court upheld the decision of the Moscow City Court without changes. On 8 August 2017, Sergey Udaltsov was released from prison.

On 11 January 2024, Udaltsov was detained after a search as part of a case of public justification of terrorism. The next day he was placed in custody.
