He was detained on 4 February 2015 along with 30 other suspects for alleged involvement in the activities of Hizb ut-Tahrir and arrested on charges of participation in a terrorist organisation. In January 2016, he was additionally charged with preparing for a violent seizure of power. On 30 July 2018, he was sentenced to 13 years in a strict regime colony.
In his final statement, Iakupov said he was not interested in the verdict, adding that there is a court of the Almighty that will judge who was right and who was wrong. Judge Oleg Semenov responded that Iakupov’s words would be subject to investigation.
