According to friends, a participant of the Afghan and Chechen wars and a left-wing activist. The Investigative Committee denied that Timofeev had ever taken part in combat operations or had anything to do with military service, besides mentioning that he had been convicted several times. Since the start of the war in Ukraine, Timofeyev criticised the Russian authorities on social media. As a result, his VKontakte page was blocked at the request of the Prosecutor General's Office.
No later than November 2022, a case of public justification of terrorism was opened against Timofeyev; later it became known that he was also charged with spreading deliberately false information about the Armed Forces. Timofeev was placed under house arrest.
During the arguments, the prosecutor asked to sentence Timofeev to two years of probation, taking into account his combat experience, but the court sentenced him to three years of real imprisonment on 25 April 2023. On 11 September, the appeal court reduced the sentence by four months.
